North Country Maid



A North Country maid up to London had strayed,

Although with her nature it did not agree,

Which made her repent, and so bitterly lament.

Oh I wish once again for the North Country.



Oh the oak and the ash and the bonnie ivy tree

They flourish at home in my own country



O fain would I be in the North Country,

Where the lads and the lasses are making of hay,

There should I see what is pleasant to me,

A mischief light on them entic'd me away!



I like not the court, nor the city resort,

Since there is no fancy for such maids as me

Their pomp and their pride I can never abide,

Because with my humor it does not agree.

How oft have I been in the Westmoreland green

Where the young men and maidens resort for to play

Where we with delight, from morning till night

Could feast it and frolic on each holiday.



The ewes and their lambs, with the kids and their dams

To see in the country how finely they play

The bells they do ring and the birds they do sing

And the fields and the gardens are pleasant and gay



At wakes and at fairs, being freed of all cares

We there with our lovers did use for to dance

Then hard hap I had, my ill fortune to try

And so up to London my steps to advance



But still I perceive, I a husband might have

If I to the city my mind could but frame

But I'll have a lad that is North Country bred

Or else I'll not marry, in the mind that I am

A maiden I am and a maid I'll remain

Until my own country again I do see

For here in this place, I shall ne'er see the face

Of him that's allotted my love for to be



Then farewell my daddy and farewell my mammy

Until I do see you, I nothing but mourn

Rememb'ring my brothers, my sisters and others

In less than a year, I hope to return.

Femme de chambre North Country



Une femme de chambre de North Country jusqu'à Londres s'était égarée,

Bien qu'avec sa nature, il n'était pas d'accord,

Ce qui l'a fait se repentir et se lamenter amèrement.

Oh, je souhaite encore une fois pour le nord du pays.



Oh le chêne et le frêne et le lierre bonnie

Ils fleurissent chez moi dans mon propre pays



Dois-je être dans le nord du pays,

Où les gars et les lasses font du foin,

Il faut que je voie ce qui m'est agréable,

Une lumière de méfait sur eux m'a attiré loin!



Je n'aime pas la cour, ni la station balnéaire,

Puisqu'il n'y a aucune fantaisie pour des femmes de chambre comme moi

Je ne pourrais jamais supporter leur pompe et leur fierté,

Parce qu'avec mon humour ça n'est pas d'accord.

Combien de fois ai-je été dans le vert Westmoreland

Où les jeunes hommes et les jeunes filles s'amusent pour jouer

Où nous nous réjouissons, du matin au soir

Pourrait le régaler et gambader à chaque fête.



Les brebis et leurs agneaux, avec les chevreaux et leurs mères

Pour voir dans le pays à quel point ils jouent finement

Les cloches qu'ils sonnent et les oiseaux qu'ils chantent

Et les champs et les jardins sont agréables et gays



Au réveil et aux foires, être libéré de tout souci

Nous là-bas avec nos amants avons utilisé pour danser

Alors dur, j'ai eu, ma malchance d'essayer

Et donc à Londres mes pas pour avancer



Mais je continue de m'apercevoir que je pourrais avoir un mari

Si je me rendais en ville, mon esprit ne pourrait que cadrer

Mais je vais avoir un garçon qui est élevé North Country

Ou bien je ne me marierai pas, dans l'esprit que je suis

Je suis une jeune fille et une femme de chambre je resterai

Jusqu'à ce que mon propre pays redevienne, je vois

Car ici à cet endroit, je ne verrai jamais le visage

De lui qui a attribué mon amour pour être



Alors adieu mon papa et adieu ma maman

Jusqu'à ce que je te vois, je ne fais que pleurer

Se souvenir de mes frères, mes s?urs et autres

Dans moins d'un an, j'espère revenir.
