Why Paddys Not At Work Today - Clancy Brothers

Dear Boss I write this note to you to tell you of my plight

And at the time of writing I am not a pretty sight

Me body is all black and blue and me face a deadly gray

And I hope you'll understand why Paddy's not at work today



I was workin' on the 14th floor; some bricks I had to clear

And throwin' 'em down from such a height was not a good idea

The foreman wasn't very pleased, he bein' an awful sod

And he said I'd have to take them down the ladder in me hod



Now shiftin' all those bricks by hand it seemed so awful slow

So I hoisted up a barrel and secured a rope below

But in my haste to do the job I was too blind to see

That a barrel full of buildin' bricks was heaveier than me



Now when I came down I cut the rope and the barrel fell like lead

And clinging tightly to the rope I started up instead

I shot up like a rocket and to my dismay I found

That halfways up I met the bloody barrel comin' down



Now the barrel broke me shoulder as to the ground it sped

And when I reached the top I struck the pulley with me head

I still clung on though numbed and shocked from this almighty blow

And the barrel spilled out half the bricks 14 floors below



Now when the bricks had fallen from the barrel to the floor

I then outweighed the barrel and I started down once more

Still clinging tightly to the rope I headed for the ground

And I fell among the broken bricks that were all scatter'd 'round



As I lay there moaning on the floor sure I thought I'd passed the worst

Then the barrel struck the pulley wheel and didn't the bottom burst

A shower of bricks came down on me sure I haven't got a hope

And as I was losing consciousness... I let go the bloody rope



Now the barrel it being heavier it started down once more

And it landed right across me as I lay there on the floor

I broke three ribs and my left arm and I can only say

That I hope you'll understand why Paddy's not at work today

Mon corps est tout noir et bleu et je fais face à un gris mortel

Et j'espère que vous comprendrez pourquoi Paddy n'est pas au travail aujourd'hui



Je travaillais au 14ème étage; quelques briques que j'ai dû dégager

Et les jeter d'une telle hauteur n'était pas une bonne idée

Le contremaître n'était pas très content, il était un horrible gazon

Et il a dit que je devrais les descendre de l'échelle en moi hod



Maintenant, déplacer toutes ces briques à la main, cela semblait si terriblement lent

J'ai donc hissé un baril et fixé une corde en dessous

Mais dans ma hâte de faire le travail, j'étais trop aveugle pour voir

Qu'un baril plein de briques de construction était plus lourd que moi



Maintenant, quand je suis descendu, j'ai coupé la corde et le baril est tombé comme du plomb

Et m'accrochant fermement à la corde, j'ai commencé à la place

J'ai tiré comme une fusée et à mon grand désarroi j'ai trouvé \u003cbr />
À mi-hauteur, j'ai rencontré le baril sanglant qui descend



Maintenant, le baril m'a brisé l'épaule quant au sol qu'il a accéléré \u003cbr />
Et quand j'ai atteint le sommet, j'ai frappé la poulie avec ma tête

Je m'accrochais toujours bien qu'engourdi et choqué par ce coup tout-puissant

Et le baril a renversé la moitié des briques 14 étages en dessous



Maintenant, quand les briques sont tombées du baril sur le sol

J'ai ensuite pesé sur le baril et j'ai recommencé à baisser

Toujours accroché fermement à la corde, je me dirigeai vers le sol

Et je suis tombé parmi les briques cassées qui étaient toutes dispersées autour



Alors que je gisais là, gémissant sur le sol, je pensais que j'avais dépassé le pire

Puis le baril a heurté la poulie et n'a pas éclaté en bas

Une pluie de briques est tombée sur moi, sûre que je n'ai pas d'espoir

Et comme je perdais connaissance ... j'ai lâché la sanglante corde



Maintenant, le baril étant plus lourd, il a recommencé à baisser

Et il a atterri juste en face de moi alors que j'étais allongé sur le sol

J'ai cassé trois côtes et mon bras gauche et je ne peux que dire
