O it was a fine and a pleasant day

Out of Yarmouth harbor I was faring

As a cabinboy on a sailing lugger

For to go and hunt the shoals of herring



O the work was hard and the hours long

And the treatment, sure it took some bearing

There was little kindness and the kicks were many

As we hunted for the shoals of herring



O we fished the Swarth and the Broken Bank

I was cook and I'd a quarter sharing

And I used to sleep standing on my feet

And I'd dream about the shoals of herring



O we left the homegrounds in the month of June

And to Canny Shiels we soon were bearing

With a hundred cran of silver darlings

That we'd taken from the shoals of herring



Now you're up on deck, you're a fisherman

You can swear and show a manly bearing

Take your turn on watch with the other fellows

While you're searching for the shoals of herring



In the stormy seas and the living gales

Just to earn your daily bread you're daring

From the Dover Straits to the Faroe Islands

As you're following the shoals of herring



O I earned my keep and I paid my way

And I earned the gear that I was wearing

Sailed a million miles, caught ten million fishes

We were sailing after shoals of herring

O c'était une belle et agréable journée

Hors du port de Yarmouth, je me débrouillais

En tant que garçon de cabine sur un bateau à voile

Pour aller chasser les bancs de hareng



O le travail était dur et les heures longues

Et le traitement, ça a pris du temps

Il y avait peu de gentillesse et les coups de pied étaient nombreux

Alors que nous chassions les bancs de hareng



O nous avons pêché le Swarth et le Broken Bank

J'étais cuisinier et je partagerais un quart

Et j'avais l'habitude de dormir debout sur mes pieds

Et je rêverais des bancs de hareng



O nous avons quitté le homegrounds au mois de juin

Et à Canny Shiels nous avons bientôt porté \u003cbr />
Avec une centaine de grues de chéris en argent

Que nous avions pris des bancs de hareng



Maintenant que vous êtes sur le pont, vous êtes un pêcheur

Vous pouvez jurer et montrer un roulement viril

Tournez à tour de rôle avec les autres gars

Pendant que vous cherchez les bancs de hareng



Dans les mers orageuses et les coups de vent vivants

Juste pour gagner votre pain quotidien, vous osez

Du détroit de Douvres aux îles Féroé \u003cbr />
Alors que vous suivez les bancs de hareng



O j'ai gagné mon donjon et j'ai payé mon chemin

Et j'ai gagné l'équipement que je portais

A navigué un million de milles, capturé dix millions de poissons

Nous naviguions après des bancs de hareng
