THE MERCHANT'S SONE



A merchant's son, he lived in wrong

And tae the beggin' he has gone;

He mounted on a noble steed

And awa' wi' pleasure he did ride.

Fal al the day.



A beggar wench he chanced tae meet

A beggar wench of low degree.

He toolc pity on her distress,

An' says: "My lass, you've got a bonny face"



They both inclined noo tae have a drink

Into a public house they both went;

They both drunk ale and brandy too

Till the both o' them got rollin' fu'.

They both inclined noo tae go tae bed

Soon under cover they were laid;

Strong ale and brandy went tae their heid

And both now slept as they were deid.



Later on this wench she rose,

And put on noo the merchant's clothes

With his hat so high and his sword sae clear

For she's awa' wi' the merchant's gear.



Early next morning the merchant rose

And looking round for tae find his clothes

There's nothing left into the room,

But a ragged petticoat and a linsey goun.



The merchant being a stranger to the toon

He put on the old coat and goun;

And down the street he soundly swore

He would never lie with a beggar no more.

LA SONE DU MARCHAND



Fils d'un marchand, il a vécu dans le mauvais

Et tae le beggin 'il est parti;

Il est monté sur un noble coursier

Et awa 'wi' plaisir qu'il a fait monter.

Fal al le jour.



Un jeune mendiant qu'il a rencontré lors de sa rencontre

Une jeune mendiante de bas degré.

Il outc pitié de sa détresse,

An 'dit: "Ma fille, tu as un visage de bonny"



Ils ont tous deux incliné noo tae prendre un verre

Dans une maison publique, ils sont tous deux entrés;

Ils ont tous deux bu de la bière et du cognac aussi

Jusqu'à ce que les deux se fassent rouler.

Ils ont tous deux incliné noo tae go tae bed

Bientôt à couvert, ils ont été étendus;

La bière et le brandy forts sont allés à leur heid

Et les deux dormaient maintenant comme ils étaient deid.



Plus tard, cette fille se leva,

Et enfile noo les vêtements du marchand

Avec son chapeau si haut et son épée bien nette

Pour elle est awa 'wi' l'équipement du marchand.



Tôt le lendemain matin, le marchand se leva

Et en cherchant tae pour trouver ses vêtements

Il ne reste plus rien dans la pièce,

Mais un jupon en lambeaux et un goun linsey.



Le marchand étant un étranger au toon

Il a mis le vieux manteau et le goun;

Et dans la rue, il a juré profondément

Il ne mentirait plus avec un mendiant.
