Fight Fiercely, Harvard! - Tom Lehrer

I know it's very bad form to quote one's own reviews, but I would like to mention something that the New York Times said about me a year ago which I've always treasured -- they said: ";Mr. Lehrer's muse is not fettered by such inhibiting factors as taste";.



Now we come to that peculiar bit of Americana known as the football fight song. I was reminded not too long ago, upon returning from my lesson with the Scrabble pro at the Harvard club in Boston, of the days of my undergraduacy long ago when there used to be these very long Saturday afternoons in the fall with nothing to do -- the library was closed -- just waiting around for the cocktail parties to begin. And on occasions like that, some of us used to wander over to the... I believe it was called the stadium, to see if anything might be going on over there. And one did come to realize that the football fight songs that one hears in comparable stadia have a tendency to be somewhat uncouth, and even violent, and that it would be refreshing, to say the least, to find one that was a bit more genteel. And here it is, dedicated to my own alma mater, and called Fight Fiercely, Harvard.



Fight fiercely, Harvard,

fight, fight, fight!

Demonstrate to them our skill.

Albeit they possess the might,

Nonetheless we have the will.

How we shall celebrate our victory,

We shall invite the whole team up for tea

(How jolly!)

Hurl that spheroid down the field, and

Je sais que c'est très mauvais de citer ses propres critiques, mais je voudrais mentionner quelque chose que le New York Times a dit à mon sujet il y a un an et que j'ai toujours chéri - ils ont dit: "; la muse de M. Lehrer n'est pas entravée par des facteurs inhibiteurs tels que le goût \";.



Maintenant, nous arrivons à ce morceau particulier d'Americana connu sous le nom de chanson de combat de football. Il y a peu de temps, à mon retour de ma leçon avec le pro du Scrabble au club de Harvard à Boston, je me suis souvenu des jours de mon premier cycle il y a longtemps quand il y avait ces très longs samedi après-midi à l'automne sans rien à faire - - la bibliothèque était fermée - attendant juste le début des cocktails. Et dans de telles occasions, certains d'entre nous se promenaient dans le ... Je crois que ça s'appelait le stade, pour voir si quelque chose pouvait se passer là-bas. Et on s'est rendu compte que les chansons de combat de football que l'on entend dans des stades comparables ont tendance à être un peu grossières, voire violentes, et qu'il serait pour le moins rafraîchissant d'en trouver une qui était un peu plus distinguée . Et le voici, dédié à mon propre alma mater, et appelé Fight Fiercely, Harvard.



Combattez férocement, Harvard,

se battre, se battre, se battre!

Démontrez-leur notre compétence.

Bien qu'ils possèdent la puissance,

Néanmoins, nous avons la volonté.

Comment nous célébrerons notre victoire,
