Readjustment Blues - JOHN DENVER

Just out of the infantry this morning, I had to pay my dues across the sea.

No one back in boot camp ever warned me

what the readjustment blues would do to me.

"Welcome to Havannah", said the pilot.

"We must have made a wrong turn on the way.

Let's buy some cigars and keep it quiet,

if they don't know we're here we'll get away."



Just as I had realized he was joking, I saw we were in Washington D.C.

'Cause there was all the patriotic buildings, just like I had seen them on TV.

It must have been a holiday, 'cause there was this parade.

People carried signs, I couldn't read, that they had made

'Till I got closer and my heart fell to my socks,

there was a battle raging and the air was filled with teargas and rocks.

There was the flag I'd fought against so often,

the one I fought for hanging upside down.

The wind was blowing hard, the dirt was flying,

it made the city sky look dark and brown.



I saw a girl, she could have been my sister,

except her hair was long and in her face.

She explained this was a demonstration against the war and for the human race.

Now, I've seen a lot of strange things in my travels. Cannibals, yes, and aliens galore.

But I never thought I'd see so many people saying we don't want your war!

The troops all had on uniforms just like the one I'd worn,

but they were all domestic and my duty chose war.

They carried guns just like the ones across the sea,

except this time, I was the citizen, and they were pointing their guns at me.

Yes, I was just a citizen, and I was walking down the street,

And it was just that night, the readjustment blues got through to me.

Tout juste sorti de l'infanterie ce matin, j'ai dû payer ma cotisation outre-mer.

Personne de retour dans le camp d'entraînement ne m'a jamais averti

ce que le blues de réajustement me ferait.

"Bienvenue à Havannah", a déclaré le pilote.

"Nous devons avoir fait un mauvais virage en cours de route.

Achetons des cigares et gardons le silence,

Tout comme je m'étais rendu compte qu'il plaisantait, j'ai vu que nous étions à Washington D.C.

Parce qu'il y avait tous les bâtiments patriotiques, comme je les avais vus à la télé.

Ça devait être des vacances, car il y avait ce défilé.

Les gens portaient des pancartes, je ne pouvais pas lire, qu'ils avaient fait

`` Jusqu'à ce que je me rapproche et que mon c?ur tombe sur mes chaussettes,

il y avait une bataille qui faisait rage et l'air était rempli de gaz lacrymogène et de roches.

Il y avait le drapeau contre lequel je me suis battu si souvent,

celui que j'ai combattu pour avoir suspendu la tête en bas.

Le vent soufflait fort, la saleté volait,

cela a rendu le ciel de la ville sombre et marron.



J'ai vu une fille, elle aurait pu être ma s?ur,

sauf que ses cheveux étaient longs et sur son visage.

Elle a expliqué qu'il s'agissait d'une manifestation contre la guerre et pour la race humaine.

Maintenant, j'ai vu beaucoup de choses étranges dans mes voyages. Les cannibales, oui, et les extraterrestres à gogo.

Mais je n'ai jamais pensé voir autant de gens dire que nous ne voulons pas de votre guerre!

Les troupes portaient toutes des uniformes comme celui que j'avais porté,

mais ils étaient tous domestiques et mon devoir a choisi la guerre.

Ils portaient des fusils comme ceux de l'autre côté de la mer,

sauf que cette fois, j'étais le citoyen, et ils pointaient leurs armes sur moi.

Oui, je n'étais qu'un citoyen et je marchais dans la rue,

Et c'était juste cette nuit-là, les bleus de réajustement m'ont traversé.
