Come single belle and beau, to me now pay attention

For once I fell in love with a damsel most bewitchin'

Miss Henrietta Bell, down in Captain Kelly's kitchen

At the age of seventeen, I was 'prenticed to a grocer

Not far from Stephen's Green, where Miss Bell for tea would go, sir

Her manners were so free, she set me heart a-twitchin'

She invited me to tea, down in Captain Kelly's kitchen.



Next Sunday bein' the day we were to have the flare-up

I dressed myself quite gay, an' I frizzed and oiled my hair up

The Captain had no wife, he had gone out a-fishin'

So we kicked up high life, below-stairs in the kitchen.



Just as the clock struck six we sat down to the table

She served me tea and cakes --- I ate while I was able,

I ate cakes, drank punch and tea, till my side had got a stitch in

And the hours flew quick away, while coortin' in the kitchen.



With my arms around her waist, I kissed ---she hinted marriage

To the door in dreadful haste came Captain Kelly's carriage!

Her looks told me full well that moment she was wishin'

That I'd get out to Hell, or somewhere far from the kitchen.



She flew up off my knees, full seven feet or higher

And over heads and heels, threw me slap into the fire

My new Repealers coat, that I'd bought from Mrs. Stichen

With a thirty-shilling note, went to blazes in the kitchen.



I grieved to see my duds, all besmeared with smoke and ashes

When a tub of dirty suds, right in my face she dashes.

As I lay on the floor, still the water she kept pitchin'

Till the footman broke the door, and marched into the kitchen.



When the Captain came downstairs, and seen my situation

In spite of all my prayers I was marched off to the station

For me they'd take no bail, tho' to get home I was itchin'

And I had to tell the tale of how I got in the kitchen.



I said she did invite me, but she gave a flat denial

For assault she did indict me, and I was sent for trial.

She swore I robbed the house, in spite of all her screechin'

And I got six months hard, for my coortin' in the kitchen.

À l'âge de dix-sept ans, j'étais prenticed à un épicier

Non loin de Stephen's Green, où irait Miss Bell pour le thé, monsieur

Ses manières étaient si libres, elle m'a mis le c?ur à se contracter

Elle m'a invité à prendre le thé, dans la cuisine du capitaine Kelly.



Dimanche prochain étant le jour où nous devions avoir la poussée

Je me suis habillé assez gay et j'ai frotté et huilé mes cheveux

Le capitaine n'avait pas de femme, il était sorti pêcher

Nous avons donc donné un coup de fouet, sous les escaliers de la cuisine.



Juste au moment où l?horloge sonnait à six heures, nous nous sommes assis à la table

Elle m'a servi du thé et des gâteaux --- j'ai mangé pendant que je pouvais,

J'ai mangé des gâteaux, bu du punch et du thé, jusqu'à ce que mon côté ait un point

Et les heures ont volé rapidement, tout en coortin 'dans la cuisine.



Avec mes bras autour de sa taille, j'ai embrassé --- elle a fait allusion au mariage

À la porte, dans une hâte terrible, la voiture du capitaine Kelly est arrivée!

Son apparence me disait parfaitement ce moment où elle souhaitait

Que je sortirais en enfer, ou quelque part loin de la cuisine.



Elle s'est envolée de mes genoux, pleine de sept pieds ou plus

Et par-dessus la tête et les talons, m'a jeté une claque dans le feu

Mon nouveau manteau Repealers, que j'avais acheté à Mme Stichen

Avec une note de trente shillings, je me suis enflammé dans la cuisine.



J'ai pleuré de voir mes ratés, tous tachés de fumée et de cendres

Quand une cuve de mousse sale, en plein visage, elle se précipite.

Alors que je m'allongeais sur le sol, toujours l'eau qu'elle continuait de piquer

Jusqu'à ce que le valet de chambre brise la porte et entre dans la cuisine.



Quand le capitaine est descendu et a vu ma situation

Malgré toutes mes prières, j'ai été emmené à la gare

Pour moi, ils ne prendraient aucune caution, mais pour rentrer à la maison, j'étais démangeaisons.

Et j'ai dû raconter comment je suis arrivé dans la cuisine.



J'ai dit qu'elle m'avait invitée, mais elle a refusé catégoriquement

Pour voies de fait, elle m'a inculpé et j'ai été envoyée en jugement.

Elle a juré que j'avais volé la maison, malgré tous ses cris

Et j'ai eu six mois de dur, pour mon coortin 'dans la cuisine.
