The Croppie Boy





Good men and true in this house who dwell,

To a stranger buichall* I bid ye tell

Is the priest at home, or may he be seen

I would speak a word with Father Green.



"The priest's at home and he may be seen,

'Tis aisy speakin' with Father Green

But you must wait while I go and see

If the holy father alone may be."



The lad has knelt to tell his sins

"In Nomine Deo" the youth begins,

At "Mea Culpa" he beats his breast

And in broken murmurs he speaks the rest.



I cursed three times since last Easter day,

At mass-time once I went to play

I passed the church yard one day in haste

And forgot to pray for my mother's rest.



At the siege of Ross did my father fall,

And at Gory my loving brothers all.

I alone am left of my name and race

I shall go to Wexford to take their place.



I bear no hate 'gainst no living thing

But I love my country above the King

Now, Father, bless me and let me go

To die, if God hath ordained it so.



The priest said naught, but a rustling noise

Made the boy look up in wild surmise;

The robes were gone, and in scarlet there

Stood a yeoman captain with fiery glare.



With fiery glare and with fury hoarse,

Instead of a blessing he breath'd a curse

" 'Twas a good thought, boy, to come here and shrive

For this one last hour's your time to live."



"On yonder river three tenders float,

Your priest's on one if he isn't shot

We hold this house for our lord, the King

And the men say, Aye! May all traitors swing."



At Geneva Valley the young man died,

And at Passage there was his body laid

Good people who live in peace and joy

Breathe a prayer, shed a tear for the Croppie boy.

Le Croppie Boy





Bons hommes et vrais dans cette maison qui habitent,

À un étranger buichall * Je vous le dis,

Le prêtre est-il à la maison ou peut-il être vu?

Je voudrais parler un mot avec le père Green.



"Le prêtre est à la maison et il peut être vu,

Mais tu dois attendre pendant que je vais voir

Si le saint père seul peut l'être. "



Le garçon s'est agenouillé pour dire ses péchés

"In Nomine Deo" commence la jeunesse,

A "Mea Culpa", il se bat la poitrine

Et dans des murmures brisés, il parle du reste.



J'ai maudit trois fois depuis le dernier jour de Pâques,

À la messe, une fois que je suis allé jouer

J'ai passé la cour de l'église un jour à la hâte

Et j'ai oublié de prier pour le repos de ma mère.



Au siège de Ross, mon père est tombé,

Et à Gory, mes frères aimants tous.

Je reste seul de mon nom et de ma race

J'irai à Wexford pour prendre leur place.



Je ne supporte pas la haine contre aucun être vivant

Mais j'aime mon pays au-dessus du roi

Maintenant, Père, bénis-moi et laisse-moi partir

Mourir, si Dieu l'a ordonné ainsi.



Le prêtre n'a rien dit, mais un bruissement

Fait lever le garçon dans une conjecture sauvage;

Les robes avaient disparu, et en écarlate là-bas

A tenu un capitaine yeoman avec un éclat ardent.



Avec un éclat ardent et une fureur rauque,

Au lieu d'une bénédiction, il a soufflé une malédiction

"C'est une bonne idée, mon garçon, de venir ici et de se moquer

Pour cette dernière heure, il est temps de vivre. "



"Sur la rivière là-bas, trois offres flottent,

Votre prêtre est sur l'un s'il n'est pas abattu

Nous tenons cette maison pour notre seigneur, le roi

Et les hommes disent: Oui! Que tous les traîtres se balancent. "



Dans la vallée de Genève, le jeune homme est décédé,

Et à Passage, son corps était couché \u003cbr />
De bonnes personnes qui vivent dans la paix et la joie

Respirez une prière, versez une larme pour le garçon Croppie.
