THE TOWN I LOVED SO WELL



In my memory I will always see

The town that I have loved so well

Where our school played ball by the gasyard well

And we laughed through the smoke and smell.

Going home in the rain running up a dark lane

Pest the jail and down beside the fountain

Those were happy days in so many many ways

In the town I loved so well.



In the early morn the shirt factory horn

Called the women from Creggan, the Moor and the Bog

While the men on the dole played a mothering role

Fed the children and then waled the dog

And when times got rough there was just about enough

But we saw it through without complaining

For deep inside was a burning pride

In the town I loved so well.

There was music there in the Derry air

Like a language that we could all understand

I remember the day when I earned my first pay

When I played in a small guitar band

There I spent my youth and to tell you the truth

I was sad to leave it all behind me

There I learned about life and I found me a wife

In the town I loved so well:





But when I returned oh my eyes how they burned

To see how a town could be brought to it's knees

By the armoured cars and the bombed out bars

And the gas that hangs on to everything

Now the army's installed by the gasyard wall

And their barbed wire gets higher and higher

With their tanks and their guns

Oh my God, what have they done

To the town I loved so well.

Though the music has gone and though we must carry on

Our spirit's been bruised but never broken

We must never forget that our hearts are still set

On tomorrow and peace once again

Now what's done is done and what's won is won

And what's lost is lost and gone forever

I can only pray for a bright brand new day

For the town I Ioved so well.

LA VILLE QUE J'AIMAIS TELLEMENT BIEN



Dans ma mémoire, je verrai toujours

La ville que j'ai tant aimée

Où notre école jouait au ballon près du puits de gaz

Et nous avons ri à travers la fumée et l'odeur.

Rentrer à la maison sous la pluie en courant sur une voie sombre

Pestez la prison et descendez près de la fontaine

C'étaient des jours heureux à bien des égards

En ville, j'ai tellement aimé.



Au petit matin, le klaxon de l'usine de chemises

Appelé les femmes de Creggan, la lande et la tourbière

Alors que les hommes sur le rôle ont joué un rôle maternel

Nourri les enfants puis promené le chien

Et quand les temps étaient durs, il y avait à peu près assez

Mais nous l'avons vu sans nous plaindre

Car au fond de moi était une fierté brûlante

En ville, j'ai tellement aimé.

Il y avait de la musique dans l'air de Derry

Comme une langue que nous pourrions tous comprendre

Je me souviens du jour où j'ai gagné mon premier salaire

Quand je jouais dans un petit groupe de guitare

Là j'ai passé ma jeunesse et pour vous dire la vérité \u003cbr />
J'étais triste de tout laisser derrière moi

Là, j'ai appris la vie et je me suis trouvé une femme

En ville, j'ai tellement aimé:





Mais quand je suis revenu oh mes yeux comment ils ont brûlé \u003cbr />
Pour voir comment une ville pourrait être mise à genoux

Près des voitures blindées et des bars bombardés

Et le gaz qui tient à tout

Maintenant, l'armée est installée près du mur du chantier gazier

Et leur fil de fer barbelé monte de plus en plus

Avec leurs chars et leurs canons

Oh mon Dieu, qu'ont-ils fait

Pour la ville que j'aimais si bien.

Bien que la musique soit partie et que nous devons continuer

Notre esprit a été meurtri mais jamais brisé \u003cbr />
Nous ne devons jamais oublier que nos c?urs sont toujours fixés

Demain et paix encore une fois

Maintenant ce qui est fait est fait et ce qui est gagné est gagné \u003cbr />
Et ce qui est perdu est perdu et disparu pour toujours

Je ne peux que prier pour une toute nouvelle journée lumineuse

Pour la ville que j'ai adoré si bien.
