The Servant of Rosemary Lane



When I was a servant in Rosemary Lane

I gained the goodwill of my master and dame,

Till at length a young sailor came there for to lie,

Which was the beginning of my misery.



He called for a candle to light him to bed,

He called for a napkin to tie round his head;

To tie round his head as he used for to do,

And he vowed and he swore I should come to bed too.



In the middle of the night this young man grew bold

And into my lap he threw handfuls of gold,

Saying 'Take this, my dear, and more you shall have.

I'll be a friend to you as long as I live.'



So we tumbled and tossed by the light of the moon;

We rose the next morning all in the same tune.

The very next morning this young man arose

And dressed himself out in his tarpaulin clothes.



'Alas,'then I cried,'oh, I am undone.

He has left me with child of a daughter or son;

And if 'tis a girl she shall stay at home with me,

And if' tis a boy he shall plough on the sea.



'With his long-quartered shoes, check shirt and blue jacket,

On the quarter-deck he shall stand like a bold British tar;

So I'll dry up my milk as you shall plainly see,

And pass for a maid in my own country.'

Quand j'étais serviteur à Rosemary Lane

J'ai gagné la bonne volonté de mon maître et de ma dame,

Jusqu'à ce qu'un jeune marin vienne là-bas pour mentir,

Ce fut le début de ma misère.



Il a appelé une bougie pour l'allumer au lit,

Il a appelé à une serviette à nouer autour de sa tête;

Attacher autour de sa tête comme il le faisait,

Et il a juré et il a juré que je devrais aussi me coucher.



Au milieu de la nuit, ce jeune homme est devenu audacieux

Et sur mes genoux il a jeté des poignées d'or,

Dire "Prenez ceci, ma chère, et plus vous en aurez.

Je serai un ami pour toi tant que je vivrai. "



Nous avons donc dégringolé et ballotté par la lumière de la lune;

Nous nous sommes levés le lendemain matin tous dans le même air.

Le lendemain matin, ce jeune homme se leva

Et s'est habillé dans ses vêtements de bâche.



"Hélas", alors j'ai pleuré, "oh, je suis défait.

Il m'a laissé avec l'enfant d'une fille ou d'un fils;

Et si c'est une fille, elle restera à la maison avec moi,

Et si c'est un garçon, il labourera sur la mer.



"Avec ses chaussures longues, sa chemise à carreaux et sa veste bleue,

Sur le quart de pont, il se tiendra comme un goudron britannique audacieux;

Je vais donc faire sécher mon lait comme vous le verrez clairement,

Et passer pour une femme de chambre dans mon propre pays. "
