The Saladin Mutiny



My name if is George Jones, I am from the county Clare:

I leaved my ancient parents and I leaved them living there

I fell in bent for roving, 'twas home I could not stay,

So much against my parents' will I shipped and went to sea.



I shipped on board the Saladin; I shudder at her name.

She was a Valparaiso boat bound to the Spanish Main.

I shipped as cabin steward; that proved my fatal day

When a demon came on board of us and led us all astray.



He said he'd work his passage. The ship was homeward bound

With copper ore and silver worth many thousand pounds.

Besides, two cabin passengers on board of us did come:

The one was Mr. Fielding and the other one was his son.



Being on a Sunday morning I'm sorry to relate

We started this desperate enterprise and first we killed our mate.

And next we killed the carpenter and overboard him threw

Our captain he did soon meet death with four more of our crew.



An oath was next administered to all the rest of the crew,

And like a band of brothers we were sworn to be true.

Being on a Sunday morning when that bloody deed was done

Then Fielding brought a Bible and swore in every one.



The firearms and weapons all we threw into the sea.

He said he'd steer for Newfoundland, to which we did agree

We found with Captain Fielding (for which he lost his life)

A brace of loaded pistols, likewise a carving knife.



His son he begged for mercy for he was all alone,

But his sad tale was soon cut short and overboard was thrown.

We served him as his father who met a watery grave;

We buried son and father beneath the stormy waves.



And next it was agreed upon before the wind to keep.

We had the world before us; we were on the trackless deep

We ofttimes kept before the wind as we could do no more

And on the twenty-ninth of May were shipwrecked on shore



To Newgate we were taken, bound down in iron chain,

Confessing to our deadly crimes and all whom we had slain.

So fare you well, my parents dear, I'll never see you more

So fare you well, my own sweetheart, you're the girl that I adore.

Je m'appelle George Jones, je viens du comté de Clare:

J'ai quitté mes anciens parents et je les ai laissés vivre là-bas

Je suis tombé dans le penchant pour errer, "à la maison, je ne pouvais pas rester,

Tellement contre la volonté de mes parents, j'ai expédié et suis allé en mer.



J'ai embarqué à bord du Saladin; Je frissonne à son nom.

C'était un bateau Valparaiso lié à la Main espagnole.

J'ai expédié comme intendant de cabine; qui a prouvé ma fatale journée

Quand un démon est venu à bord de nous et nous a tous égarés.



Il a dit qu'il travaillerait son passage. Le navire était rentré à la maison

Avec du minerai de cuivre et de l'argent valant plusieurs milliers de livres.

En outre, deux passagers à bord de nous sont venus:

L'un était M. Fielding et l'autre était son fils.



Étant un dimanche matin, je suis désolé de vous raconter

Nous avons commencé cette entreprise désespérée et nous avons d'abord tué notre compagnon.

Et ensuite nous avons tué le charpentier et par dessus bord, il a jeté \u003cbr />
Notre capitaine, il a bientôt rencontré la mort avec quatre autres membres de notre équipage.



Un serment a ensuite été prononcé pour tout le reste de l'équipage,

Et comme un groupe de frères, nous avons juré d'être vrai.

Être un dimanche matin quand cette action sanglante a été accomplie

Fielding a ensuite apporté une Bible et juré en chacun.



Les armes à feu et les armes que nous avons jetées à la mer.

Il a dit qu'il se dirigerait vers Terre-Neuve, ce que nous avons convenu

Nous avons trouvé avec le capitaine Fielding (pour lequel il a perdu la vie)

Une paire de pistolets chargés, également un couteau à découper.



Son fils, il a demandé grâce car il était tout seul,

Mais sa triste histoire a rapidement été écourtée et par dessus bord jetée.

Nous l'avons servi de père qui a rencontré une tombe aqueuse;

Nous avons enterré son fils et son père sous les vagues orageuses.



Et ensuite il a été convenu avant le vent de garder.

Nous avions le monde devant nous; nous étions sur la piste profonde

Nous nous tenions souvent devant le vent car nous ne pouvions plus faire

Et le 29 mai ont fait naufrage à terre



À Newgate, nous avons été emmenés, attachés dans une chaîne de fer,

Avouer nos crimes mortels et tous ceux que nous avions tués.

Alors allez-vous bien, mes parents chers, je ne vous verrai plus jamais

Alors va bien, ma chérie, tu es la fille que j'adore.



Remarque: Un véritable incident qui s'est produit en 1843.
