The Poor Man

O poor man, O poor man come tell unto me true;

How you maintain your family and how you carry them through;

How you maintain your family when most of them are small,

And nothing but your labour to maintain then all.



'Tis sometimes I do reap and sometimes I do sow,

Sometimes hedging, sometimes ditching, such work I often do;

There's nothing comes amiss to me, I harrow and I plow,

I maintain my family by sweat of my brow.



Early in the morning, l'm always of good cheer,

With a flail in my hand and a bottle of good beer;

I live as happy as those worth ten thousand a year.



My wife she's always willing to hall [sic] in the yoke,

We live like lambs together, and we never do provoke;

Altho' it may be possible that we do now live poor,

Yet we can feed the beggars that come to our door.



When I come home at nignt, su weary then I be,

Then I take up my youngest child and dance it on my knee,

The rest all come around me and make a prattling noise,

And this is all the comfort [a] poor man enjoys,



This nobleman hearing what this poor man did say,

He invited him to dine with him the very next day,

He invited him his wife and children all to bring,

And in token of favor he gave him a ring,



Quite early the next morning, this poor man arose,

And dress'd up all his children in the finest of their cloaths

Then the poor man and his wife and his seven children small

They all went to dine at this nobleman's hall, '



And then after dinner he soon did let him know,

What into this poor man's hands he had then to bestow;

'Twas forty or fifty good acres of his land,

He gave him in writing and sign'd his own hand,



Saying on this you may live happy all your life,

Therefore I do entreat you to be kind to your wife;

Be kind unto your wife and children all around,

There's few of those noblemen that are to be found.

Le pauvre homme

O pauvre homme, O pauvre homme viens me dire vrai;

Comment vous entretenez votre famille et comment vous la portez;

Comment vous entretenez votre famille lorsque la plupart d'entre eux sont petits,

Et rien que votre travail pour maintenir ensuite tout.



C'est parfois je récolte et parfois je sème,

Parfois couverture, parfois abandon, ce travail que je fais souvent;

Il n'y a rien qui me vienne mal, je herse et je laboure,

Je soutiens ma famille par la sueur de mon front.



Tôt le matin, je suis toujours de bonne humeur,

Avec un fléau à la main et une bouteille de bonne bière;

Je vis aussi heureux que ceux qui en valent dix mille par an.



Ma femme, elle est toujours prête à mettre [sic] dans le joug,

Nous vivons comme des agneaux ensemble, et nous ne provoquons jamais;

Bien qu'il soit possible que nous vivions maintenant pauvres,

Pourtant, nous pouvons nourrir les mendiants qui viennent à notre porte.



Quand je rentre à la maison à Nignt, je me lasse alors je suis,

Ensuite, je prends mon plus jeune enfant et je le danse sur mes genoux,

Les autres viennent autour de moi et font un bruit de bavardage,

Et c'est tout le confort dont jouit un pauvre homme,



Ce noble entend ce que ce pauvre homme a dit,

Il l'a invité à dîner avec lui le lendemain,

Il l'a invité sa femme et ses enfants à apporter,

Et en signe de faveur, il lui a donné une bague,



Très tôt le lendemain matin, ce pauvre homme se leva,

Et habiller tous ses enfants dans le plus beau de leurs manteaux

Puis le pauvre homme et sa femme et ses sept enfants petits

Ils sont tous allés dîner dans la salle de ce noble, '



Et puis après le dîner, il lui a rapidement fait savoir,

Ce qu'il avait alors à donner à ce pauvre homme;

"Twas quarante ou cinquante bons acres de ses terres,

Il lui a donné par écrit et a signé de sa propre main,



En disant cela, vous pouvez vivre heureux toute votre vie,

Par conséquent, je vous supplie d'être gentil avec votre femme;

Soyez gentil avec votre femme et vos enfants tout autour,

Il y a peu de ces nobles qui se trouvent.
