MCCARTHY's WIDOW



'Twas three years ago this very day, I took to me a wife.

And ever since she's proved to be a burden to me life.

She was the widdy of McCarthy and of course that was her name,

But for changing it to Kelly, sure she's not to blame.

She speaks about McCarthy and his virtues every day,

And she wishes l'd keep sober and be like him every way.

But she beat him with the broom stick every time the baby cried,

And made him rock the cradle 'til from cruelty he died.



cho: For she'd lick him, she'd kick him, she'd never let him be.

She'd lash him, she'd slash him until he couldn't see.

Oh, McCarthy wasn't hearty, now she has a different party.

She might have licked McCarthy but she can't lick me.



For l'm going down to Pace's now, the purpose to get tight.

And when I do get home again, there's bound to be a fight.

I will smash up all the furniture before I do get through.

Upset the stove and - the first dumb thing I do.

The difference then in the two men, she hastily will see,

And know which is the best man, McCarthy or me.

Then, maybe she'd behave herself and learn to shut her mouth,

For if she gets me into jail, she'll have to get me out.



She said that every evening he done all the work he could;

He used to wash the dishes and he split the kindling wood.

He'd carry in the coal himself, no labor would he shirk;

He'd rinse the clothes on wash days before he went to work.

He lit the fires every morn and got the breakfast, too;

In fact, there was not anything at home he didn't do.

And if he didn't stir himself, and wash and mend his clothes

She'd often send the frying pan to try and break his nose.

WIDOW DE MCCARTHY



C'était il y a trois ans ce jour-là, j'ai pris une femme.

Et depuis qu'elle s'est avérée être un fardeau pour moi la vie.

Elle était la louche de McCarthy et bien sûr c'était son nom,

Mais pour l'avoir changé en Kelly, bien sûr qu'elle n'est pas à blâmer.

Elle parle de McCarthy et de ses vertus tous les jours,

Et elle souhaite que je reste sobre et que je sois comme lui dans tous les sens.

Mais elle le battait avec le balai à chaque fois que le bébé pleurait,

Et lui a fait bercer le berceau jusqu'à ce qu'il meure de cruauté.



cho: Car elle le lècherait, elle lui donnerait des coups de pied, elle ne le laisserait jamais être.

Elle le fouettait, elle le coupait jusqu'à ce qu'il ne puisse pas voir.

Oh, McCarthy n'était pas copieuse, maintenant elle a une autre fête.

Elle a peut-être léché McCarthy mais elle ne peut pas me lécher.



Car je vais chez Pace's maintenant, le but d'être serré.

Et quand je rentre à la maison, il y aura forcément une bagarre.

Je vais casser tous les meubles avant de passer.

Déranger le poêle et - la première chose stupide que je fais.

La différence alors entre les deux hommes, elle le verra à la hâte,

Et sachez quel est le meilleur homme, McCarthy ou moi.

Ensuite, peut-être qu'elle se comporterait elle-même et apprendrait à fermer la bouche,

Car si elle me met en prison, elle devra me faire sortir.



Elle a dit que chaque soir, il faisait tout le travail qu'il pouvait;

Il faisait la vaisselle et fendait le bois d'allumage.

Il porterait lui-même le charbon, aucun travail ne se déroberait;

Il rincait les vêtements les jours de lavage avant d'aller travailler.

Il allumait le feu tous les matins et prenait aussi le petit-déjeuner;

En fait, il n'y avait rien à la maison qu'il n'ait pas fait.

Et s'il ne bougeait pas, lavait et raccommodait ses vêtements

Elle envoyait souvent la poêle pour essayer de lui casser le nez.
