LURE OF THE SEA



When I was young and thought about my life

I wondered what the times they owed to me

My mother's love showed me what I would learn

Take no more than what my merit earned



In my town, the choices they were three

The oystering, the farming, and the sea

The land, for me, spoke of hardship and strife

And so I chose the bold seafaring life



Oh the lure, the lure allure allure

The lure and the calling of the sea

Well would I be one the shoreline with thee

Tending o' me own chandlery



I went to sea with silver pieces three

They slipped into the water from my hands

The mate, he said, "Make your mark upon the bow

And we'll fetch them out when we return to land"



I studied hard, the captain taught me well

No need to seek attractions on the shoreline

The hours were long and the work it was hard

But I was captain by the age of twenty-one





Storms, disease, and many lives were lost

Our anchor touched at many points of calling

Some tides ran smooth and high was the cost

But five and thirty years were worth it all



Now as I look back and think of many friends

How was it I escaped from Neptune's graveyard?

When beacon's glow I could no longer sight

Was then I quit the bold seafaring life

Quand j'étais jeune et que je pensais à ma vie

Je me demandais ce que les fois ils me devaient

L'amour de ma mère m'a montré ce que j'apprendrais

Ne prenez pas plus que ce que mon mérite a gagné \u003cbr />


Dans ma ville, les choix étaient trois

L'huître, l'élevage et la mer

La terre, pour moi, parlait de difficultés et de conflits

Et j'ai donc choisi la vie de marin audacieuse



Oh le leurre, le leurre allure allure

L'attrait et l'appel de la mer

Eh bien, serais-je l'un des rivages avec toi

S'occuper de ma propre quincaillerie



Je suis allé en mer avec trois pièces en argent

Ils se sont glissés dans l'eau de mes mains

Le compagnon, dit-il, "Faites votre marque sur l'arc

Et nous les récupérerons quand nous reviendrons sur terre "



J'ai étudié dur, le capitaine m'a bien appris

Pas besoin de chercher des attractions sur le rivage

Les heures étaient longues et le travail était dur

Mais j'étais capitaine à vingt et un ans





Les tempêtes, les maladies et de nombreuses vies ont été perdues

Notre ancre a touché à de nombreux points d'appel

Certaines marées se sont déroulées sans heurt et le coût était élevé \u003cbr />
Mais cinq et trente ans en valaient la peine



Maintenant que je regarde en arrière et que je pense à de nombreux amis

Comment ai-je pu m'échapper du cimetière de Neptune?

Quand la lueur de la balise je ne pouvais plus voir

Ai-je alors quitté la vie marine audacieuse
