LILAC SUNDAY BALLAD



Twas on a Lilac Sunday

In the year of '86

Newtowne went out a-tourin'

With it's hankies and it's sticks

Unto the Arboretum

Where they awaited their big chance

To impress the other Morris teams

With the Upton-on-Severn dance



Some went right and some went left

And some went up and down

Some were doing back to backs

And others doing rounds

Heads were knocked and knuckles smashed

And the audience they swore

they'd never seem a Morris team

Dance quit that way before

Dave Stryker was the number one

A brave and valiant lad

To dance impressive Morris

Was a passion that he had

He gave it a few seconds

And thought "what the hell"

Instead of calling figures

I'll just give a macho yell



Now Stryker's sense of Morris

It was second to none

And it would have been impressive

Had the dance been smartly done

But he made one grievous error

Understandable but true

He thought if Newtowne danced a dance

It was a dance they knew



The men danced the first figure

And they danced it rather well

With their ribbons fluttering in the air

And the jingling of their bells

Then came the second figure

And they awaited Strkyer's call

And Dave threw back his head

And bellowed "Hanabuajall!"



But Dave was not discouraged

He didn't give up yet

He knew that deep down inside them

There was good stuff in this set

"Perhaps if I yell louder

They will get the right idea"

So when the next figure came around

He yelled "Mgzuhdea"



The men they were embarrassed

The men they were ashamed

But after several pints of beer

Their spirits they regained

They even forgave Stryker

But one thing has changed, it's true

When Newtowne dances Upton

Stryker dances number two

Twas un dimanche lilas

En '86

Newtowne est sorti en tournée

Avec ses mouchoirs et ses bâtons

Vers l'Arboretum

Où ils attendaient leur grande chance

Pour impressionner les autres équipes de Morris

Avec la danse Upton-on-Severn



Certains sont allés à droite et certains sont allés à gauche

Et certains montaient et descendaient

Certains faisaient dos à dos

Et d'autres font des rondes

Les têtes ont été renversées et les phalanges ont été brisées

Et le public qu'ils ont juré \u003cbr />
ils ne sembleraient jamais être une équipe Morris

Danser de cette façon avant

Dave Stryker était le numéro un

Un brave et vaillant garçon

Pour danser Morris impressionnant

C'était une passion qu'il avait

Il lui a donné quelques secondes

Et j'ai pensé \"qu'est-ce que c'est" "
Au lieu d'appeler des chiffres

Je vais juste crier macho



Maintenant le sens de Stryker envers Morris

C'était incomparable

Et ça aurait été impressionnant

Si la danse avait été intelligemment exécutée

Mais il a fait une grave erreur

Compréhensible mais vrai

Il pensait que si Newtowne dansait une danse

C'était une danse qu'ils connaissaient



Les hommes ont dansé la première figure

Et ils l'ont plutôt bien dansé \u003cbr />
Avec leurs rubans flottant dans l'air

Et le tintement de leurs cloches

Puis vint le deuxième chiffre

Et ils ont attendu l'appel de Strkyer

Et Dave a jeté sa tête en arrière

Et beugla "Hanabuajall!"



Mais Dave n'était pas découragé \u003cbr />
Il n'a pas encore abandonné \u003cbr />
Il savait qu'au fond d'eux

Il y avait de bonnes choses dans cet ensemble

"Peut-être que si je crie plus fort

Ils auront la bonne idée "

Donc, quand le chiffre suivant est venu

Il a crié \"Mgzuhdea"



Les hommes, ils étaient gênés

Les hommes ont eu honte

Mais après plusieurs pintes de bière

Leurs esprits ont retrouvé \u003cbr />
Ils ont même pardonné à Stryker

Mais une chose a changé, c'est vrai

Quand Newtowne danse Upton

Stryker danse numéro deux
