Hist'ry books give us historical facts

Of soldiers and sailors and men with their axes

But who filled their bellies and who washed their clothes

Who raised up the children, who nurtured their souls?



Without all the women, now; where would we be ?

Working and caring throughout history

Their hands on the plow, but their stories untold,

So here's to the women, who shouldered the load!



The wilderness held you in the palm of her hand,

It took more than muscle to settle this land,

Women together went straight to the task

With schools and libraries-a city at last.

It's down at the fact'ry, it's out on the line

A woman is working from morning to night

Her mind on the children, her hand on the frame

If the kids get in trouble, it's she who is blamed

Then it's back home again to do supper and chores

Canning and mending and scrubbing the floors

Scarce see the children before they're in bed

Hard life to follow for beans and fried bread

In hard times and good times the women would share

Their songs and their stories, their loves and their fears

And their history's recorded, the song never ends

In the mem'ries of mothers and sisters and friends.

Les livres d'histoire nous donnent des faits historiques

Des soldats et des marins et des hommes avec leurs haches

Mais qui a rempli leur ventre et qui a lavé leurs vêtements

Qui a élevé les enfants, qui a nourri leur âme?



Sans toutes les femmes, maintenant; où serions-nous?

Travailler et prendre soin à travers l'histoire

Leurs mains sur la charrue, mais leurs histoires indicibles,

Voici donc les femmes qui ont supporté la charge!



Le désert vous tenait dans la paume de sa main,

Il a fallu plus que du muscle pour coloniser cette terre,

Les femmes sont allées directement à la tâche

Avec des écoles et des bibliothèques, enfin une ville.

C'est en panne, c'est sur la ligne

Une femme travaille du matin au soir

Son esprit sur les enfants, sa main sur le cadre

Si les enfants ont des ennuis, c'est elle qui est blâmée

Ensuite, il est de retour à la maison pour souper et tâches ménagères

Mise en conserve, raccommodage et lavage des sols

On voit à peine les enfants avant de se coucher

Vie difficile à suivre pour les haricots et le pain frit

Dans les moments difficiles et les bons moments, les femmes partageaient

Leurs chansons et leurs histoires, leurs amours et leurs peurs

Et leur histoire est enregistrée, la chanson ne finit jamais

Dans les mémoires des mères, des s?urs et des amis.
