FOOLS OF FORTY NINE



When gold was found in forty-eight, the people said 'twas gas,

And some were fools enough to think the lumps were only brass.

But they soon were satisfied, and started off to mine,

They bought a ship, came 'round the Horn in the fall of forty-nine.

Then they thought of what they had been told, when they started after gold:

That they never, in this world, would make their pile.



The poor, the old, the rotten scows were advertised to sail

To New Orleans with passengers, but they must come and bail.

The ships were crowded more than full, but some hung on behind,

And others dived off from the wharf, and swam 'till they were blind.

With rusty pork, and stinking beef, and rotten wormy bread,

With captains, too, that never were as high as the mainmast head,

The steerage passengers would rave and swear they'd paid their passage

They wanted something more to eat besides the lowly sausage.

And they begun to cross the plains with oxen, holler, and haul,

And steamers, they began to run as far as Panama,

And there for months the people stayed, that started after gold;

And some returned disgusted with the lies they had been told.

The people died on every route, they sickened and died like sheep.

And those at sea, 'fore they were dead, were launched into the deep.

And those that died, crossing the plains, fared not as well as that.

For holes was dug and they was dumped along the terrible Platte.

Quand l'or a été trouvé dans quarante-huit, les gens ont dit: "C'était du gaz,

Et certains étaient assez idiots pour penser que les morceaux n'étaient que du laiton.

Mais ils ont vite été satisfaits et ont commencé le mien,

Ils ont acheté un navire, ont fait le tour du Horn à l'automne quarante-neuf.

Puis ils ont pensé à ce qu'on leur avait dit, quand ils ont commencé après l'or:

Qu'ils ne feraient jamais, dans ce monde, leur pile.



Les pauvres, les vieux, les chalands pourris ont été annoncés pour naviguer

À la Nouvelle-Orléans avec des passagers, mais ils doivent venir cautionner.

Les navires étaient surpeuplés, mais certains se sont accrochés derrière,

Et d'autres ont plongé du quai et ont nagé jusqu'à ce qu'ils soient aveugles.

Avec du porc rouillé, du b?uf puant et du pain vermoulu pourri,

Avec des capitaines aussi, qui n'ont jamais été aussi hauts que la tête du mât,

Les passagers de la direction se déliraient et juraient qu'ils avaient payé leur passage

Ils voulaient quelque chose de plus à manger en plus de la saucisse humble.

Et ils ont commencé à traverser les plaines avec des b?ufs, des hurlements et du transport,

Et les paquebots, ils ont commencé à courir jusqu'au Panama,

Et là, pendant des mois, les gens sont restés, cela a commencé après l'or;

Et certains sont revenus dégoûtés des mensonges qui leur avaient été racontés.

Les gens sont morts sur toutes les routes, ils sont tombés malades et sont morts comme des moutons.

Et ceux en mer, avant d'être morts, ont été lancés dans les profondeurs.

Et ceux qui sont morts, traversant les plaines, ne s'en sont pas aussi bien sortis.

Pour les trous a été creusé et ils ont été jetés le long de la terrible Platte.
