THE FLYING DUTCHMAN



'Twas on a dark and stormy night well southward of the Cape,

And from a stiff nor'-wester we'd just made our escape.

Like an infant in his cradle rocked, ihe breeze lulled us to sleep,

While peacefully we ploughed along the bosom of the deep.



At last the helmsman gave a shout of terror and of fear,

As if he had just gazed upon some sudden danger near.

We looked all round the ocean and there upon our lee

We saw the Flying Dutchman come bounding through the sea.



Take in all flowing canvas, now, our watchful master cried,

For this for our ship's company great terror does betide.

The billows tossed all white with foam and dangerous did appear,

As the wind sprang to a hurricane and auld Van Dyke came near.



Here comes the Flying Dutchman, comes fast through the hissing

spray,

And proceeding by the tempest he heads for Table Bay.

With bird-like speed he's borne along before the howling blast,

But he never can cast anchor there, for the Bay, alas, he's passed.



Moan, ye Flying Dutchman, moan, for horrible is thy doom:

The ocean round the stormy Cape it is thy living tomb;

For there Van Dyke must beat about forever, night and day;

He tries in vain his oath to keep to anchor in Table Bay.

'Twas sur une nuit sombre et orageuse bien au sud du Cap,

Et d'un nord-ouest raide, nous venions de nous échapper.

Comme un bébé dans son berceau secoué, la brise nous a bercés pour dormir,

Tout en paix, nous avons labouré le long du gouffre.



Enfin le timonier poussa un cri de terreur et de peur,

Comme s'il venait de contempler un danger soudain à proximité.

Nous avons regardé tout autour de l'océan et là sur notre vent

Nous avons vu le Hollandais volant venir bondir à travers la mer.



Rassemblez toutes les toiles fluides, maintenant, notre maître vigilant cria,

Pour cela, pour la compagnie de notre navire, une grande terreur est vraie.

Les flots jetés tout blanc de mousse et dangereux sont apparus,

Alors que le vent tombait sur un ouragan et auld Van Dyke s'est approché.



Voici le Flying Dutchman, arrive vite à travers le sifflement

pulvérisation,

Et par la tempête, il se dirige vers Table Bay.

Avec une vitesse semblable à celle d'un oiseau qu'il a emporté avant l'explosion hurlante,

Mais il ne pourra jamais y jeter l'ancre, car la Baie, hélas, il est passé.



Gémissant, vous le Hollandais volant, gémissez, car horrible est votre destin:

L'océan autour du Cap orageux c'est ton tombeau vivant;

Car là, Van Dyke doit battre pour toujours, nuit et jour;

Il essaie en vain de prêter serment de garder l'ancre à Table Bay.
