Carmen

In Spain, where the courtly Castilian hidalgo

Twangs lightly each night his romantic guitar,

Where the castanets clink on the gay piazetta

And strains of fandangoes are heard from afar;

There lived, I am told, a bold hussy named Carmen

A pampered young vamp full of devil and guile.

Cigarette and cigar men were smitten with Carmen;

From near and from far men were caught with her smile.



Now one day it happened she got in a scrap, and

Proceeded to beat up a girl in the shop,

Till someone suggested they have her arrested

And though she protested they called in a cop.

In command of the guard was a shavetail named Jose

A valiant young don with a weakness for janes,

And so great was her beauty this bold second loot, he

Could not do his duty and put her in chains.



"I'm sorry, my dear, to appear to arrest you ---

At best you are hardly much more than a kid.

If I let you go, say, there'll be some expose.

But beat it," Said Jose, and beat it she did.

The scene now is changed to a strange sort of tavern

A hangout for gypsies, a rough sort of dive.

And Carmen, who CAN sing, is warbling and dancing

Awaiting her date, the late loot, to arrive.



In comes Escamillo, the toreadoro,

And sings his great solo 'mid plaudits and cheers.

And when he concludes, after three or four encores,

The gypsies depart and Don Jose appears.

These gypsy companions of Carmen are smugglers

The worst band of bandits and cut-throats in Spain,

And Jose, we know well's A.W.O.L. Says

He, "Since that's so, well, I guess I'll remain."



The gypsies depart to the heart of the mountains,

And with them goes Jose who's grouchy and sore.

For Carmen, the flirt, has deserted poor Jose,

And transferred her love to the toreador.

And as he sits sulking, he sees Escamillo.

A challenge is passed and they draw out their knives.

Till Jose, though lighter, disarms the bull fighter

And near kills the blighter when Carmen arrives.



Now comes Micaela, Don Jose's young sweetheart,

A nice looking blonde without much in her dome.

Says she, "Do you know, kid, you ma's kinda low, kid?"

Says Jose, "Let's go, kid," and follows her home.

At last we arrive at the day of the bullfight;

The grandstand is packed and the bleachers are full.

A picturesque scene, a square near the arena

The Plaza del Toro, or Place of the Bull.



Dark skinned senoritas with fans and mantillas

And haughty Castillians in festive array;

And dolled out to charm men, suspecting no harm,

Enters, last of all, Carmen to witness the fray.

But here's our friend Jose, who seizes her bridle. A

Wild homicidal glint gleams in his eye.

He's mad and disgusted and cries out, "You've busted

The heart that once trusted you. Wed me, or die!"



Though Carmen is frightened at how this scene might end,

I'm forced to admit she is game to the last.

She says to him, "Banish the notion and vanish!

Vamos! (which is Spanish for "run away fast."

A scream and a struggle! She reels and she staggers

For Don Jose's dagger's plunged deep in her breast.

No more will she flirt in her old way, that's certain.

So ring down the curtain, poor Carmen's at rest.

En Espagne, où l'hidalgo castillan courtois

Twangs légèrement chaque nuit sa guitare romantique,

Où les castagnettes tintent sur la piazetta gay

Et les souches de fandangoes sont entendues de loin;

Il y avait, me dit-on, une coquine audacieuse nommée Carmen

Un jeune vampire choyé plein de diable et de ruse.

Des hommes de cigarettes et de cigares ont été séduits par Carmen;

De près et de loin, des hommes ont été surpris par son sourire.



Maintenant, un jour, c'est arrivé, elle est tombée dans une ferraille, et

Passé à tabac une fille dans la boutique,

Jusqu'à ce que quelqu'un suggère de l'arrêter

Et bien qu'elle ait protesté, ils ont appelé un flic.

À la tête de la garde se trouvait une queue de chaton nommée Jose

Un jeune vaillant avec une faiblesse pour janes,

Et si grande était sa beauté ce deuxième butin audacieux, il

Impossible de faire son devoir et de la mettre en chaîne.



"Je suis désolé, ma chère, d'avoir l'air de t'arrêter ---

Au mieux, vous n'êtes guère plus qu'un enfant.

Si je vous laisse partir, disons, il y aura des dénonciations.

Mais il a battu ", a déclaré José, et il l'a battue.

La scène est maintenant changée en une étrange sorte de taverne

Un lieu de rencontre pour les gitans, une sorte de plongée rude.

Et Carmen, qui PEUT chanter, gazouille et danse

En attendant son rendez-vous, le dernier butin, pour arriver.



En vient Escamillo, le toreadoro,

Et chante ses grands applaudissements et acclamations en solo.

Et quand il conclut, après trois ou quatre rappels,

Les gitans s'en vont et Don José apparaît.

Ces compagnons gitans de Carmen sont des passeurs

Le pire groupe de bandits et de gorges tranchantes d'Espagne,

Et Jose, nous connaissons bien A.W.O.L. Dit

Lui, "Puisque c'est le cas, eh bien, je suppose que je vais rester."



Les gitans partent au coeur des montagnes,

Et avec eux va Jose qui est grognon et endolori.

Pour Carmen, le flirt, a déserté le pauvre Jose,

Et transféré son amour au toréador.

Et pendant qu'il s'assoit, il voit Escamillo.

Un défi est passé et ils sortent leurs couteaux.

Jusqu'à ce que José, bien que plus léger, désarme le torero

Et près de tue le plus sombre quand Carmen arrive.



Maintenant vient Micaela, la jeune chérie de Don Jose,

Une jolie blonde à l'air sans grand-chose dans son dôme.

Dit-elle, "Savez-vous, gamin, vous êtes un peu faible, maman?"

Dit Jose, "Allons-y, gamin", et suit sa maison.

Nous arrivons enfin au jour de la corrida;

La tribune est pleine et les gradins sont pleins.

Une scène pittoresque, une place près de l'arène

La Plaza del Toro, ou Place du Taureau.



Senoritas à peau foncée avec éventails et mantilles

Et les castillans hautains dans un décor festif;

Et poupée pour charmer les hommes, ne soupçonnant aucun mal,

Entre, enfin, Carmen pour assister à la mêlée.

Mais voici notre ami Jose, qui saisit sa bride. A

Une lueur d'homicide sauvage brille dans ses yeux.

Il est fou et dégoûté et crie: "Vous avez éclaté \u003cbr />
Le c?ur qui vous a fait confiance. Epouse-moi ou meurs! "



Bien que Carmen ait peur de la fin de cette scène,

Je suis obligé d'admettre qu'elle joue jusqu'au dernier.

Elle lui dit: "Bannis la notion et disparais!

Vamos! (qui est espagnol pour "fuir vite."

Un cri et une lutte! Elle titube et elle titube

Pour le poignard de Don Jose plongé profondément dans sa poitrine.

Elle ne flirtera plus à son ancienne manière, c'est certain.

Alors sonne le rideau, la pauvre Carmen est au repos.
