I woke up smelling bacon with a pinecone in my side

I stuck my head out in the morning sun

There was one guy fixing breakfast and twenty singing songs

So I knew that breakfast never would get done

I crawled out of my sleeping bag and picked up my guitar

To start the day with coffee and a song

We'd built a singing city underneath the spreading trees

To join it all you do is sing along



With started in the morning with a hymn to the sun

We sang through lunch and dinner and we've hardly just begun

We'll try to sing a thousand songs before this day is done

And tomorrow there'll be a thousand more



I met a girl down by the fire from a green Missouri farm

She sang a song she said her mother made

She sang about her father and the love he had to give

And I offered her a song of mine in trade

She said she didn't have the time; she had to catch a train

And I feel a little sorry now and then

But when you hear a thousand songs I guess it has to be

There's some that you'll never hear again



A kid came up and said hello and said he knew my name

And he thought my songs were really where it's at

And then he sang a song of his - he said it wasn't much

But I wish that I could write one song like that

They used to say that making songs was only for the few

But we took these old guitars and proved them wrong

For music is a language most anyone can learn

And if you sing then you can write a song



We sang around a lantern when we should have been in bed

And everybody took a turn or two

Whenever one crawled off to sleep, another took his place

And everybody brought in something new

I used to think I knew most every song there was to know

I could sing out any one you cared to call

But now I'd need three lifetimes just to learn what's going round

And if everybody's got a song, then no one's got em all

Je me suis réveillé en sentant du bacon avec une pomme de pin dans mon côté

J'ai sorti la tête au soleil du matin

Il y avait un gars qui préparait le petit-déjeuner et vingt chansons qui chantaient

Alors je savais que le petit déjeuner ne serait jamais fait

J'ai rampé hors de mon sac de couchage et pris ma guitare

Pour commencer la journée avec un café et une chanson

Nous avions construit une ville chantante sous les arbres qui s'étalaient

Pour le rejoindre, tout ce que vous faites est de chanter



Avec commencé le matin avec un hymne au soleil

Nous avons chanté pendant le déjeuner et le dîner et nous venons à peine de commencer

Nous essaierons de chanter un millier de chansons avant la fin de cette journée

Et demain il y en aura mille autres



J'ai rencontré une fille près du feu d'une ferme verte du Missouri

Elle a chanté une chanson qu'elle a dit que sa mère avait faite

Elle a chanté sur son père et l'amour qu'il devait donner

Et je lui ai offert une de mes chansons dans le commerce

Elle a dit qu'elle n'avait pas le temps; elle devait prendre un train

Et je me sens un peu désolé de temps en temps

Mais quand tu entends mille chansons, je suppose que ça doit être

Il y en a que vous n'entendrez plus jamais



Un enfant est venu et a dit bonjour et a dit qu'il connaissait mon nom

Et il pensait que mes chansons étaient vraiment là où elles étaient

Et puis il a chanté une de ses chansons - il a dit que ce n'était pas beaucoup

Mais j'aimerais pouvoir écrire une chanson comme ça

Ils avaient l'habitude de dire que faire des chansons n'était que pour quelques

Mais nous avons pris ces vieilles guitares et nous leur avons prouvé qu'elles étaient fausses

Car la musique est une langue que tout le monde peut apprendre

Et si vous chantez, vous pouvez écrire une chanson



Nous avons chanté autour d'une lanterne alors que nous aurions dû être au lit

Et tout le monde a pris un tour ou deux

Chaque fois que l?un d?eux s?endormit, un autre prend sa place

Et tout le monde a apporté quelque chose de nouveau

J'avais l'habitude de penser que je connaissais presque toutes les chansons qu'il y avait à connaître

Je pourrais chanter n'importe qui que vous vouliez appeler

Mais maintenant, il me faudrait trois vies juste pour apprendre ce qui se passe

Et si tout le monde a une chanson, alors personne ne les a toutes
