They saw the flags, it didn't look so bad

they heard the news and how we could not lose

And they sang with the marching band

The sailors' wives with anxious eyes

But it impressed them too

They even cheered up as the ships pulled clear



And though it was no-one's fault

That men went off to war

I saw a thousand faces all along the shore...

The women were watching

So no-one thought of turning back



He didn't fight for his country's pride

His life was sold cos it was better than the dole

He even waved as they sent him away

But something's changed - no this is not a game

She held his hand and it was cold and damp

She couldn't hide from the feelings inside

Cos in the storm the night before

She heard him calling... goodbye goodbye goodbye

Won't you give me a smile

I could be gone for a long long while



And though it was no-one's fault

That he had to go to war

Among a thousand faces all along the shore

A woman was watching

He never thought of turning back

Ils ont vu les drapeaux, ça n'avait pas l'air si mal

ils ont entendu les nouvelles et comment nous ne pouvions pas perdre

Et ils ont chanté avec la fanfare

Les femmes de marins aux yeux inquiets

Mais ça les a aussi impressionnés

Ils ont même remonté le moral lorsque les navires se sont éloignés



Et même si ce n'était la faute de personne

Que les hommes sont partis à la guerre

J'ai vu mille visages tout le long du rivage ...

Les femmes regardaient

Alors personne n'a pensé à revenir en arrière



Il ne s'est pas battu pour la fierté de son pays

Sa vie a été vendue parce que c'était mieux que le dole

Il a même fait signe de la main pendant qu'ils le renvoyaient

Mais quelque chose a changé - non ce n'est pas un jeu

Elle a tenu sa main et il faisait froid et humide

Elle ne pouvait pas se cacher des sentiments à l'intérieur

Cos dans la tempête la veille

Elle l'a entendu appeler ... au revoir au revoir au revoir

Ne veux-tu pas me sourire

Je pourrais être parti très longtemps



Et même si ce n'était la faute de personne

Qu'il devait aller à la guerre

Parmi mille visages tout au long du rivage

Une femme regardait
