at the beginning of time

before there were waves

we'd sit in our boats

we'd float there all day



and there weren't any waves

cuz there wasn't any wind

cuz there wasn't any sun

we were waitin for the world to begin



*we were waiting in the darkness*



each in our own boat

each in our own thoughts

sometimes you could hear people talking amongst themselves but...

(someone had a boat with wheels and i said

you're a bit early but i know how you feel)

but mostly it was just silence



and the silence was only broken by

the absence of the clinking of the masts

and every now and then a bird would not fly by

and someone would look up and say - what wasn't that?



*we were waiting in the darkness*



and one night (or was it day?)

i was awoken from a dream

i was dreaming of someplace like i'd never been

and i heard someone say

someone's fallen in and they can't swim

so i leaned out and i pulled them in

and he was holding his head

and it was HUGE and shaped like a fish

and he slid down to the crook of the keel

and when i was sure he'd fallen asleep

i fell back to my reverie



*we were waiting waiting waiting*

*waiting in the darkness*



and you know what I miss most about that time?

was the quality of the blackness

it was soft somehow in the absence of fear

you could take it into your mouth

and send it out through your teeth

(my dear)



but the silence...

oh, if i could go back to those times

i'd take that silence there

i'd take it into myself and bring it back to you

and this is what i'd say

avant qu'il y ait des vagues

nous nous asseyions dans nos bateaux

nous y flotterions toute la journée



et il n'y avait pas de vagues

parce qu'il n'y avait pas de vent

parce qu'il n'y avait pas de soleil

nous attendions que le monde commence



* nous attendions dans l'obscurité *



chacun dans notre propre bateau

chacun dans nos propres pensées

parfois on pouvait entendre des gens parler entre eux mais ...

(quelqu'un avait un bateau à roues et j'ai dit

tu es un peu tôt mais je sais ce que tu ressens)

mais surtout c'était juste du silence



et le silence n'a été rompu que par

l'absence de cliquetis des mâts

et de temps en temps un oiseau ne volait pas

et quelqu'un levait les yeux et disait - qu'est-ce que ce n'était pas?



* nous attendions dans l'obscurité *



et une nuit (ou était-ce le jour?)

j'ai été réveillé d'un rêve

je rêvais d'un endroit comme si je n'avais jamais été

et j'ai entendu quelqu'un dire

quelqu'un est tombé et ne sait pas nager

donc je me suis penché et je les ai tirés

et il tenait sa tête

et il était ÉNORME et avait la forme d'un poisson

et il a glissé jusqu'au creux de la quille

et quand j'étais sûr qu'il s'était endormi

je suis retombé dans ma rêverie



* nous attendions en attendant en attendant *

* attente dans l'obscurité *



et vous savez ce qui me manque le plus à cette époque?

était la qualité de la noirceur

il était doux en quelque sorte en l'absence de peur

vous pourriez le prendre dans votre bouche

et envoyez-le par vos dents

(ma chère)



mais le silence ...

oh, si je pouvais revenir à cette époque

je prendrais ce silence là \u003cbr />
je le prendrais en moi et te le ramènerais

et c'est ce que je dirais
