Each man kills the thing he loves, by each let this be heard. Some do it with a bitter look, some with a flattering word. The coward does it with a kiss, the brave man with a sword. Some kill their love when they are young, some when they are old. Some strangle with the hands of lust, some with the hands of gold. The kindest use a knife because, the dead so soon grow cold. Some love too little, some too long, some buy and other sell. Some do the deed with so many tears, and some without a sigh. For each man kills the thing he loves, yet each man does not die.

Chaque homme tue la chose qu'il aime, en faisant chacun entendre cela. Certains le font avec un air amer, certains avec un mot flatteur. Le lâche le fait avec un baiser, l'homme courageux avec une épée. Certains tuent leur amour quand ils sont jeunes, certains quand ils sont vieux. Certains étranglent avec les mains de la luxure, certains avec les mains d'or. Les plus gentils utilisent un couteau parce que les morts se refroidissent si vite. Certains aiment trop peu, certains trop longtemps, certains achètent et d'autres vendent. Certains font l'acte avec tant de larmes, d'autres sans soupir. Car chaque homme tue la chose qu'il aime, mais chaque homme ne meurt pas.
