"The Man I Love" had the odd distinction of becoming a recognized standard despite its having been (1)

thrown out of the musical for which it had been written

("Lady, Be Good!" in 1924); (2) sung in a show that flopped on the road (the 1927 "Strike Up the

Band"); (3) added to and then cut from a third musical

("Rosalie"); (4) rejected when "Strike Up the Band" was successfully revised in 1929. The reason for

the last situation was ironic: the song had become too well

known!

"L'Homme que j'aime" avait l'étrange distinction de devenir une norme reconnue bien qu'il ait été (1)

jeté hors de la comédie musicale pour laquelle il avait été écrit

("Dame, sois bonne!" En 1924); (2) chanté dans un spectacle qui s'est effondré sur la route (le Strike Up the
de 1927
Band "); (3) ajouté puis coupé dans une troisième comédie musicale

("Rosalie"); (4) rejeté lorsque "Strike Up the Band" a été révisé avec succès en 1929. La raison de

la dernière situation était ironique: la chanson était devenue trop bien
