A bullet from the back of a bush took Medgar Evers' blood.

A finger fired the trigger to his name.

A handle hid out in the dark

A hand set the spark

Two eyes took the aim

Behind a man's brain

But he can't be blamed

He's only a pawn in their game.



A South politician preaches to the poor white man,

"You got more than the blacks, don't complain.

You're better than them, you been born with white skin," they explain.

And the Negro's name

Is used it is plain

For the politician's gain

As he rises to fame

And the poor white remains

On the caboose of the train

But it ain't him to blame

He's only a pawn in their game.



The deputy sheriffs, the soldiers, the governors get paid,

And the marshals and cops get the same,

But the poor white man's used in the hands of them all like a tool.

He's taught in his school

From the start by the rule

That the laws are with him

To protect his white skin

To keep up his hate

So he never thinks straight

'Bout the shape that he's in

But it ain't him to blame

He's only a pawn in their game.



From the poverty shacks, he looks from the cracks to the tracks,

And the hoof beats pound in his brain.

And he's taught how to walk in a pack

Shoot in the back

With his fist in a clinch

To hang and to lynch

To hide 'neath the hood

To kill with no pain

Like a dog on a chain

He ain't got no name

But it ain't him to blame

He's only a pawn in their game.



Today, Medgar Evers was buried from the bullet he caught.

They lowered him down as a king.

But when the shadowy sun sets on the one

That fired the gun

He'll see by his grave

On the stone that remains

Carved next to his name

His epitaph plain:

Only a pawn in their game.

Une balle à l'arrière d'un buisson a pris le sang de Medgar Evers.

Un doigt a tiré sur la détente à son nom.

Une poignée cachée dans le noir

Une main a créé l'étincelle

Deux yeux ont pris l'objectif

Derrière le cerveau d'un homme

Mais il ne peut pas être blâmé

Il n'est qu'un pion dans leur jeu.



Un politicien du Sud prêche au pauvre homme blanc,

"Tu as plus que les noirs, ne te plains pas.

Tu es meilleur qu?eux, tu es né avec une peau blanche ", expliquent-ils.

Et le nom du nègre

Est utilisé, il est simple

Pour le gain du politicien

Alors qu'il atteint la gloire

Et le pauvre blanc reste

Sur le caboose du train

Mais ce n'est pas lui à blâmer

Il n'est qu'un pion dans leur jeu.



Les shérifs adjoints, les soldats, les gouverneurs sont payés,

Et les maréchaux et les flics obtiennent la même chose,

Mais le pauvre homme blanc est utilisé entre les mains de tous comme un outil.

Il a enseigné dans son école

Dès le début par la règle

Que les lois sont avec lui

Pour protéger sa peau blanche

Pour maintenir sa haine

Alors il ne pense jamais droit

'Bout la forme dans laquelle il est

Mais ce n'est pas lui à blâmer

Il n'est qu'un pion dans leur jeu.



Depuis les cabanes de la pauvreté, il regarde des fissures aux pistes,

Et le sabot bat dans son cerveau.

Et il a appris à marcher en meute

Tirez dans le dos

Avec son poing dans un corps à corps

Accrocher et lyncher

Pour se cacher sous le capot

Tuer sans douleur

Comme un chien sur une chaîne

Il n'a pas de nom

Mais ce n'est pas lui à blâmer

Il n'est qu'un pion dans leur jeu.



Aujourd'hui, Medgar Evers a été enterré de la balle qu'il a attrapée.

Ils l'ont abaissé en tant que roi.

Mais quand le soleil ombragé se couche sur l'un

Qui a tiré le pistolet

Il verra par sa tombe

Sur la pierre qui reste

Sculpté à côté de son nom

Sa plaine épitaphe:
