i read a note my grandma wrote

back in 1923

grandpa kept it in his coat

and he showed it once to me



he said boy you might not understand

but a long long time ago

grandmas daddy didn't like me none

but i loved your grandma so



we had this crazy plan to meet and run away together

get married in the first town we came to and live forever

but nailed to the tree where we were suppose to meet instead

i found this letter and this is what it said:



if you get there before i do

don't give up on me

i'll meet you when my chores are through

i don't know how long i'll be

but i'm not gonna let you down

darling wait and see

and between now and then

until i see you again

i'll be lovin' you

love, me



i read those words just hours before my grandma passed away

in the doorway of the church where me and gandpa stopped to pray

i know i've never seen him cry

in all me fifteen years

but as he read these words to her

his eyes filled up with tears

j'ai lu une note que ma grand-mère a écrite

en 1923

grand-père l'a gardé dans son manteau

et il me l'a montré une fois



il a dit garçon que tu ne pourrais pas comprendre

mais il y a très longtemps

grand-père papa ne m'a pas aimé aucun

mais j'ai adoré ta grand-mère alors



nous avions ce plan fou de nous rencontrer et de fuir ensemble

se marier dans la première ville où nous sommes venus et vivre éternellement

mais cloué sur l'arbre où nous devions nous rencontrer à la place

j'ai trouvé cette lettre et voici ce qu'elle disait:

Je te rencontrerai quand mes tâches seront terminées

je ne sais pas combien de temps je serai

mais je ne vais pas te laisser tomber

j'ai lu ces mots quelques heures avant le décès de ma grand-mère

à la porte de l'église où moi et gandpa nous sommes arrêtés pour prier

je sais que je ne l'ai jamais vu pleurer

en tout moi quinze ans

mais en lui lisant ces mots

ses yeux se sont remplis de larmes
