A Century Of Elvis - Belle And Sebastian

We were sitting in the living room on the sofa,

the wrong way round, looking out the window.

It was quiet, and then in the car park across the road

we saw Elvis - look, there beside the postman's van,

and he was walking round the postman's van,

looking in the open door.



He looked as if he was thinking about getting in,

but then the postman came back,

and he swaggered off,

walked past the window and down the stairs,

and then at the bottom of the stairs right

by the caretaker's office,

he started licking the pavement.



Every night now since we moved in that new house

there's this noise outside the door at just about half seven

or eight o' clock every night.



And if we go and look outside the door,

Elvis'll be standing there waiting to be let in.

And then he wanders into the living room,

maybe sits down on one of the chairs

or even lies down on the floor.



He doesn't say much,

he just stays there for an hour or two, watching the TV.

We talk to him a bit,

and then around ten o' clock, he'll go away again,

and not come back until the next night.



There's a lot of lanes and stuff around here,

around the house - although it's right in the middle

of the city it seems quite like the country,

it's dead hidden - safe I suppose, made for night living.

There's a lot of squirrels and birds,

and Stuart says he's seen about nine foxes

there when he's jumped over the fence on

his way to Prior's Road.



Sometimes you can go out walking,

and when you've been out for a wee while even you don't know

where you are anymore,

so it would be pretty hard for anyone else to find you.

I suppose that's why he spends so much time there,

that's why he's come to live there, or maybe it's

just the squirrels.

I read about somewhere that he likes squirrels quite a lot.

There's these two videos that we got for wedding presents -

called the e-files, e-files one and e-files two about how Elvis is

supposed to be still alive.



And one time when he came round we were watching one of

those, but he didn't say anything he just sat on the armchair.

He was playing with his collar a bit, and we watched

it right through and then when it finished he just

got up and walked off into the mist and didn't say anything.

the first few times he came round I didn't speak to him at all,

I wasn't really sure what to say.

And Karen spoke to him quite a lot -

she seemed to know what to do more than I do.

He had quite a strange manner though,

he'd go into your stuff and look through it, then he'd maybe

pick something up and play with it for a wee while,

but he'd never make any comment about any of it.

Seemed pretty rude to me. I just watched whatever Karen did,

and listened to how she talked to him and then,

after a while I started to copy that, and tell him a few things,

not really bothered about whether he

responded or said anything back or not. I think the first time

I spoke to him we were sitting up on the mezzanine and

I said that I would tell him about me and wee Karen,

and how it was that we'd come to be living there.

I thought he probably liked the fact that we were

living there because he came round so much, so

I thought he might want to know how it was that it came about.

We did it all over backwards, I told him.

First of all we got to know each other,

and then a while after that we met,

and when we'd known each other for

about seven years we decided to have an anniversary,

and that went quite well,

so after the anniversary we had a honeymoon,

and that went well too,

so after that we decided that we would get married.

That's why we're living there now.

I used to think my dad was

Elvis, but I haven't told him that yet. I haven't told my dad either

Nous étions assis dans le salon sur le canapé,

dans le mauvais sens, en regardant par la fenêtre.

C'était calme, puis dans le parking de l'autre côté de la route

nous avons vu Elvis - regardez, là à côté de la camionnette du facteur,

et il marchait autour de la camionnette du facteur,

regardant dans la porte ouverte.



Il avait l'air de penser à entrer,

mais le facteur est revenu,

et il s'est fané,

passé la fenêtre et descendu les escaliers,

puis en bas des escaliers à droite

par le bureau du gardien,

il a commencé à lécher le trottoir.



Chaque nuit maintenant depuis que nous avons emménagé dans cette nouvelle maison

il y a ce bruit devant la porte à environ sept heures et demie

ou huit heures tous les soirs.



Et si nous allons regarder dehors,

Elvis sera là, attendant d'être laissé entrer.

Et puis il erre dans le salon,

s'assoit peut-être sur une des chaises

ou même allongé sur le sol.



Il ne dit pas grand-chose,

il y reste juste une heure ou deux, regarde la télé.

On lui parle un peu,

puis vers dix heures, il repartira,

et ne revenez pas avant la nuit suivante.



Il y a beaucoup de voies et d'autres choses ici,

autour de la maison - bien qu'il soit en plein milieu

de la ville on dirait un peu le pays,

c'est mort caché - sûr je suppose, fait pour la vie nocturne.

Il y a beaucoup d'écureuils et d'oiseaux,

et Stuart dit qu'il a vu environ neuf renards

là quand il a sauté par-dessus la clôture

son chemin vers Prior's Road.



Parfois, vous pouvez sortir marcher,

et quand vous êtes sorti pour un tout petit alors que même vous ne savez pas

où tu es plus,

il serait donc assez difficile pour quelqu'un d'autre de vous trouver.

Je suppose que c'est pour ça qu'il passe autant de temps là-bas,

c'est pourquoi il est venu y vivre, ou peut-être que c'est

juste les écureuils.

J'ai lu quelque part qu'il aime beaucoup les écureuils.

Il y a ces deux vidéos que nous avons eues pour des cadeaux de mariage -

appelé les fichiers électroniques, les fichiers électroniques un et les fichiers électroniques deux sur la façon dont Elvis est

censé être encore en vie.



Et une fois, quand il est venu, nous regardions l'un des

ceux-ci, mais il n'a rien dit, il s'est simplement assis sur le fauteuil.

Il jouait un peu avec son collier, et nous avons regardé \u003cbr />
à travers et puis quand il a fini, il a juste

se leva et partit dans la brume et ne dit rien.

les premières fois qu'il est venu, je ne lui ai pas du tout parlé,

Je ne savais pas trop quoi dire.

Et Karen lui a beaucoup parlé -

elle semblait savoir quoi faire de plus que moi.

Il avait une manière assez étrange cependant,

il irait dans vos affaires et les regarderait, puis il pourrait peut-être

ramasser quelque chose et jouer avec pendant un petit moment,

mais il n'a fait aucun commentaire à ce sujet.

Semblait assez grossier pour moi. J'ai juste regardé ce que Karen a fait,

et écouté comment elle lui a parlé, puis,

après un moment j'ai commencé à copier ça, et lui dire quelques petites choses,

pas vraiment pris la peine de savoir s'il

répondu ou dit quoi que ce soit en retour ou non. Je pense que la première fois

Je lui ai parlé, nous étions assis sur la mezzanine et

J'ai dit que je lui parlerais de moi et de Karen,

et comment nous venions vivre là-bas.

Je pensais qu'il aimait probablement le fait que nous étions

y vivre parce qu'il est venu tellement, alors

J'ai pensé qu'il voudrait peut-être savoir comment cela s'est produit.

Nous l'avons fait à l'envers, je lui ai dit.

Tout d'abord, nous avons fait connaissance,

puis un moment après que nous nous sommes rencontrés,

et quand nous nous connaissions depuis

environ sept ans, nous avons décidé d'avoir un anniversaire,

et ça s'est plutôt bien passé,

donc après l'anniversaire, nous avons eu une lune de miel,

et ça s'est bien passé aussi,

donc après cela, nous avons décidé de nous marier.

C'est pourquoi nous y vivons maintenant.

Je pensais que mon père était

Elvis, mais je ne lui ai pas encore dit ça. Je ne l'ai pas dit à mon père non plus
