IT'S A LONG WAY FROM AMPHIOXUS

A fishlike thing appeared among the annelids one day

It hadn't any terrapods or cetae to display

It hadn't any eyes or jaws or ventral nervous chord

But it had a lot of gillslits and it had a notochord.



Cho.

It's a long way from amphioxus

It's a long way to us.

It's a long way from amphioxus

To the meanest human cuss.

So goodbye to fins and gillslits

Hello lungs and hair,

It's a long, long way from amphioxus

But we all came from there.



Well, it wasn't much to look at and it scarce knew how to swim

Asterius was very sure it hadn't come from him.

The mollusks wouldn't own it and the arthropods got sore

So the poor thing had to burrow in the sand along the shore.



Cho.



It burrowed in the sand before it grabbed in with its tail

And said gillslits and myotomes are all to no avail.

I've grown some metapleural folds and sport an oral hood

But all these fine new characters don't do me any good.



Cho.



He soaked a while down in the sand without a bit of pep

Then he stiffened up his notochord and said: "I'll beat 'em yet."

They laugh and show their ignorance, but I don't mind their jeers

Just wait until they see me in a hundred million years.



Cho.



My notochord will stiffen to a chain of vertebrae

As fins, my metapleural folds will agitate the sea

My tiny dorsal nervous chord will be a mighty brain

And vertebrates will dominate the animal domain.

C'EST UN LONG CHEMIN D'AMPHIOXUS

Un truc ressemblant à un poisson est apparu parmi les annélides un jour

Il n'y avait pas de terrapodes ni de cétes à afficher

Il n'avait ni yeux ni mâchoires ni corde nerveuse ventrale

Mais il y avait beaucoup de branchies et il y avait une notocorde.



Cho.

C'est loin de l'amphioxus

C'est un long chemin pour nous.

C'est loin de l'amphioxus

Aux plus méchants humains.

Adieu les nageoires et les branchies

Bonjour les poumons et les cheveux,

C'est très loin de l'amphioxus

Mais nous sommes tous venus de là.



Eh bien, ce n'était pas grand-chose à regarder et il savait à peine nager

Asterius était très sûr que cela ne venait pas de lui.

Les mollusques n'en seraient pas propriétaires et les arthropodes se sont endoloris

Le pauvre a donc dû creuser dans le sable le long du rivage.

Il s'est enfoui dans le sable avant de l'attraper avec sa queue

Et les branchies et les myotomes sont inutiles.

J'ai développé des plis métapleuraux et arboré une cagoule buccale

Mais tous ces beaux nouveaux personnages ne me font aucun bien.

Il a trempé un peu dans le sable sans un peu de peps

Puis il a raidi sa corde et a dit: "Je vais encore les battre."

Ils rient et montrent leur ignorance, mais ça ne me dérange pas leurs railleries

Attendez juste qu'ils me voient dans cent millions d'années.

Ma notochorde se raidira en une chaîne de vertèbres

En tant que nageoires, mes plis métapleuraux agiteront la mer

Mon petit accord nerveux dorsal sera un puissant cerveau

Et les vertébrés domineront le domaine animal.
