The Sick Note - Dubliners

Dear Sir, I write this note to you to tell you of me plight

and at the time of writing, I am not a pretty sight;

me body is all black and blue, me face a deathly gray

and I write this note to say why Paddy's not at work today.



While working on the fourteenth floor some bricks I had to clear;

now, to throw them down from such a height was not a good idea.

the foreman wasn't very pleased, he beeing an awkward sod

he said I'd have to cart them down the ladders in me hod.



Now, clearing all these bricks by hand it was so very slow,

so I hoisted up a barrel and secured the rope below.

But in me haste to do the job I was to blind to see

that a barrelful of building bricks was heavier than me.



So when I untied the rope the barrel fell like lead

and clinging tightly to the rope I started up instead.

Well, I shot up like a rocket till to my dismay I found

that halfway up I met the bloody barrel comming down.



Well, the barrel broke me shoulder as to the ground it sped,

and when I reached the top I banged the pully with my head.

Well, I clung on tight through numbed shock from this almighty blow

and the barrel spilled out half the bricks fourteen floors below.



Now, when these bricks had fallen from the barrel to the floor

I then outweighed the barrel and so started down once more;

still clinging tightly to the rope, I sped towards the ground,

and I landed on the brocken bricks that were all scattered round.



Well, I lay there groaning on the ground, I thougth I'd passed the worst,

when the barrel hit the pully-wheel and then the bottom burst.

Well, a shower of bricks rained down on me, I hadn't got a hope

as I lay there moaning on the ground, I let go of the bloody rope.

Cher Monsieur, je vous écris cette note pour vous parler de mon sort

et au moment d'écrire ces lignes, je ne suis pas une jolie vue;

mon corps est tout noir et bleu, je fais face à un gris mortel

et j'écris cette note pour dire pourquoi Paddy n'est pas au travail aujourd'hui.



En travaillant au quatorzième étage, j'ai dû dégager quelques briques;

maintenant, les jeter d'une telle hauteur n'était pas une bonne idée.

le contremaître n'était pas très content, il était un gazon maladroit

il a dit que je devrais les faire descendre les échelles en moi hod.



Maintenant, nettoyer toutes ces briques à la main était très lent,

alors j'ai hissé un tonneau et fixé la corde en dessous.

Mais en moi je me hâte de faire le boulot que je devais aveugler pour voir

qu'un baril de briques de construction était plus lourd que moi.



Alors quand j'ai détaché la corde, le canon est tombé comme du plomb

et m'accrochant fermement à la corde, j'ai commencé à la place.

Eh bien, j'ai tiré comme une fusée jusqu'à ce que, à ma grande consternation, je trouve

qu'à mi-hauteur j'ai rencontré le baril sanglant qui descendait.



Eh bien, le canon m'a cassé l'épaule quant au sol qu'il a accéléré,

et quand j'ai atteint le sommet, j'ai frappé le ravin avec ma tête.

Eh bien, je me suis accroché fermement au choc engourdi de ce coup tout-puissant

et le canon renversé sur la moitié des briques quatorze étages plus bas.



Maintenant, quand ces briques sont tombées du tonneau au sol

J'ai ensuite pesé sur le baril et j'ai donc recommencé à baisser;

toujours accroché fermement à la corde, j'ai filé vers le sol,

et j'ai atterri sur les briques brocken qui étaient toutes éparpillées.



Eh bien, je gisais là, gémissant sur le sol, je pensais que j'avais dépassé le pire,

quand le baril a heurté la roue du pully puis le fond a éclaté.

Eh bien, une pluie de briques est tombée sur moi, je n'avais pas d'espoir

comme je gisais là gémissant sur le sol, j'ai lâché la sanglante corde.
