About 20 years ago, on a train bound for nowhere,

I met up with The Gambler; We were both too tired to sleep.

So we took turns a starin' through the window at the darkness.

Til' boredom overtook us and he commenced to speak.



He said: "Son, I've made a life out of readin' people's faces,

"And knowin' what their cards were, by the way they held their eyes.

"And if you don't mind my sayin', I would say you're out of aces;

"And for one taste of your whiskey, I will give you some advice."



So I handed him my bottle, and he drank down my last swallow.

Then he bummed a cigarette; then he bummed a light.

The night got deathly quiet and his face lost all expression.

He said: "If you're gonna play the game, boy, you better learn to play it right."



"'Cos ev'ry gambler knows that the secret to survival,

"Is knowin' what to throw away and knowin' what to keep.

"And ev'ry hand's a winner, just like ev'ry hand's a loser.

"And the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep.



"You got to know when to hold 'em; know when to fold 'em.

"Know when to walk away; know when to run.

"You don't ever count your money while you're sittin' at the table.

"There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin' is done."



"You got to know when to hold 'em; know when to fold 'em.

"Know when to walk away; know when to run.

"You don't ever count your money while you're sittin' at the table.

"There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin' is done."



And when he finished speakin', he turned back t'ward the window.

Put out his cigarette; faded off to sleep.

And somewhere in the darkness, the gambler he broke even.

But in his final words I found an ace that I could keep.

Il y a environ 20 ans, dans un train en direction de nulle part,

J'ai rencontré The Gambler; Nous étions tous les deux trop fatigués pour dormir.

Nous avons donc tour à tour regardé par la fenêtre dans l'obscurité.

L'ennui de Til nous a dépassés et il a commencé à parler.



Il a dit: "Fils, j'ai fait une vie de la lecture des visages des gens,

"Et sachant quelles étaient leurs cartes, par la façon dont ils ont tenu leurs yeux.

"Et si cela ne vous dérange pas que je dise, je dirais que vous êtes sans as;

"Et pour un avant-goût de votre whisky, je vais vous donner quelques conseils."



Alors je lui ai tendu ma bouteille et il a bu ma dernière gorgée.

Puis il a frappé une cigarette; puis il a détruit une lumière.

La nuit est devenue silencieuse et son visage a perdu toute expression.

Il a dit: "Si tu veux jouer au jeu, mon garçon, tu ferais mieux d'apprendre à bien jouer."



"Le joueur de Cos ev'ry sait que le secret de la survie,

"C'est savoir quoi jeter et savoir quoi garder.

"Et chaque main est gagnante, tout comme une main perdante.

"Et le mieux que vous puissiez espérer est de mourir dans votre sommeil.



"Vous devez savoir quand les tenir; sachez quand les plier.

"Sachez quand partir, sachez quand courir.

"Vous ne comptez jamais votre argent pendant que vous êtes assis à table.

"Il y aura assez de temps pour compter quand la transaction sera terminée."



"Vous devez savoir quand les tenir; sachez quand les plier.

Et quand il a fini de parler, il s'est retourné vers la fenêtre.

Éteins sa cigarette; disparu pour dormir.

Et quelque part dans l'obscurité, le joueur a même atteint l'équilibre.

Mais dans ses derniers mots, j'ai trouvé un as que je pouvais garder.
